Catalogue entry

The castle is seen to the north in a rapid sketch but with just enough detail to identify the south front with Joan’s Tower on the left and Bulmer’s Tower on the right – compare the close view on folio 29 recto (D12286; CLVI 15a). There is a slightly more finished view from further south on folio 19 verso (D12277; CLVI 11). The present view includes a small bridge, probably over Langley Beck, which now flows through woods to the north of Staindrop.
As now bound and foliated, sketches of the castle and its surroundings fill most of the second half of the sketchbook, from folio 17 recto (D12298; CLVI 22a) to folio 32 recto (D12309; CLVI 28).
