This view may depict Thionville, a French town on the Moselle located close to the border with Luxembourg. The twin towers in the distance recall the architecture of the Church of Saint-Maximin and the spire to the left maybe the bell-tower of the town’s sixteenth-century town hall. Thionville is represented elsewhere in this sketchbook (Tate D28225, D28236, D28237; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 20, 36a, 37) and in the earlier Rivers Meuse and Moselle sketchbook of 1824 (Tate D19710; Turner Bequest CCXVI 81).
Technical notes:
There is staining from the leather overlaps on the back outside cover at the top and bottom left and right of the page.
