The 'Heidelberg up to Salzburg' sketchbook contains many drawings of Heidelberg and others recording Turner's journey directly across Germany through Heilbronn, Stuttgart, Ulm and Munich to Salzburg. It was the only occasion on which he used this route. One of these sketches of Stuttgart shows the market place with the town hall and a black marble fountain on the left and the fifteenth-century collegiate church in the background; the other is dominated by the massive Old Palace. Turner probably bought this sketchbook and no.29 from the same stationer's shop in Heidelberg. Though different in colour, the marbled paper used in their bindings is identical in design.
