For Turner’s visit to Tabley in 1808, see Introduction to the sketchbook. In the context of a sequence of views of the house and estate beginning on folio 2 (D06985) this sketch and others on folios 13–16, 18, 20 (D06996–D06998, D07000, D07005; Turner Bequest CV 11, 12, 14, 13, 15, 19) probably represent estate workers, sportsmen or fishermen around the wooded edges of the Moat or other waterways in the grounds.
