Catalogue entry

As suggested by Finberg in his entry for this page, Turner seems here to turn his perspective towards the west, taking in the Kent coastline as it carries on from Hythe to Dungeness.1 It is possible that this sketch offers an alternative perspective from the viewpoint adopted on the facing page, folio 59 verso (D17305). That is to say, the latter observes the prospect towards the east, and the present page records the view to the west.
