The identification of the subject is uncertain. Finberg suggested with some confidence that it is Glen Lyon,1 but Turner saw only the eastern end of the Glen; see the Introduction to the 1801 Scotch Lakes sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest LVI). This may be a view near MacGregor’s Leap. Finberg also identified Tate D03400 (Turner Bequest LVIII 21) as ‘Glen Lyon’; it is here tentatively proposed as a view in Glen Dochart.
