Catalogue entry

A quick sketch of the Lanterne de Démosthène; Turner may have referred to this sketch when he painted his gouache and watercolour of The Lanterne at St-Cloud (Tate T05619) for Turner’s Annual Tour, 1835 (Tate D24697; Turner Bequest CCLIX 132); although his design was principally based on a sketch made on another visit to Saint-Cloud in 1832 (Tate D23908; Turner Bequest CCLIV 14a).1
For further sketches of Saint-Cloud in this sketchbook, see folio 3 verso (Tate D24505; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 3a).

Technical notes:
The page has numerous areas of foxing, especially across the left-hand side.
