Catalogue entry

With the page turned horizontally, the classical Walhalla memorial is seen from the west at the left, atop the massive sequence of stone steps and platforms descending the steep slope to the River Danube, seen meandering across its broad valley towards the south-east.
The subject was identified by Cecilia Powell.1 For numerous contemporary views of the Walhalla and nearby Donaustauf and St Salvator’s Church in this sketchbook and elsewhere, see under folio 33 verso (D31341);2 for Regensburg, a few miles upriver, see under folio 18 verso (D31311).3
