Catalogue entry

Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, these variations are two of many studies in this sketchbook for the large watercolour of about 1805 showing Lake of Geneva, with Mont Blanc from the Lake (Yale Center for British Art, New Haven);1 see under folio 8 verso (D04917; Turner Bequest LXXXI 16). In both of those on this page, Turner pursues the taller, squarer format that appears in the composition study on the recto (D05061; Turner Bequest LXXXI 159).
