280. [N05533] Two Compositions: A Claudian Seaport and an Open Landscape c. 1825–30
THE TATE GALLERY, LONDON (5533)
Canvas, 13 1/4 × 23 3/4 (33·5 × 60·5)
Coll. Turner Bequest 1856 (169, one of 2 each 2'0" × 1'1"; identified 1946 by chalk number on back); transferred to the Tate Gallery 1947.
Lit. Davies 1946, pp. 166, 188.
Apparently two separate compositions on one canvas, a Claudian port scene with architecture in perspective on the left, and an open hilly landscape occupying about a third of the canvas on the right. The dating c. 1825–30 is very tentative.
