The vertical study of trees is continued inside the front cover (D40639); drawn with the page turned horizontally, the three figures in Scottish dress may be compared with a drawing in the 1801 Scotch Figures sketchbook (Tate D03446; Turner Bequest LIX 6).
There is a further study of trees on the following opening, folios 1 verso–2 recto (D03278–D03279); see comments on Turner’s attention to trees on his tour of the Highlands in the Introduction to the 1801 Scotch Lakes sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest LVI).
