This sketch depicts a view looking south down the Via Pinciana, the road which runs in between the gardens of the Villa Borghese and the Aurelian walls. The two towers in the centre may depict the Porta Pinciana, the gate near the south-eastern perimeter of the Borghese Gardens (see also folios 43–43 verso, D16230–1; Turner Bequest 42 and 42a).
