Catalogue entry

As the artist’s inscription indicates, this sketch depicts a view of a street in Imola, a town approximately twenty miles south-east of Bologna which the artist passed en route towards Ancona as part of his outward journey to Rome. Related vistas can also be found on folio 17 verso (D13890), and in the Venice to Ancona sketchbook (Tate D14555; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 33a).
