Catalogue entry

The main sketch on this page depicts a view of the Bay of Salerno looking west from the harbour towards the Mole. Compare Turner’s copy of a similar view in Dr Monro’s Album of Italian Views (Tate D36471; Turner Bequest CCCLXXIII 58).
Also on this page is an inverted landscape sketch. Turner’s inscription suggests that his location is a bridge at Castellammare di Stabia (formerly known as Castellamare), on the road between Naples and Sorrento. The view therefore is likely to depict the Lattari Mountains of the Sorrentine peninsula. See also folio 58 verso (D15906; Turner Bequest CLXXXV 91).
