Catalogue entry
[from] Works Formerly Attributed to Turner
Nos. 545–7a: Richard Wilson (1713 or 1714–1782) or his Studio
547a. [D00899] Ruined Church beside a River, with Castle in the foreground
THE BRITISH MUSEUM, LONDON (XXXIII-b)
Oil on canvas, a fragment of a larger whole, irregular, approx. 8 × 6 (20×15)
Coll. ?Turner Bequest 1856 or Garnons Bequest 1854.
Lit. Finberg 1909, i, p. 68.
The attribution of this fragment on coarse canvas was already doubted by Finberg. In style it seems close to the work of Richard Wilson, though too broad and summary to rank with all but his weakest works. In the case of this work too, as in that of Nos. 546 [N01890] and 547 [N01891], a picture from the Garnons Bequest may have become absorbed into the so-called Turner Bequest.
