T00501 ROTHERHITHE 1961
Inscr. ‘Vaughan’ b.r. and ‘Rotherhithe 30×48 1961’ on back of canvas.
Canvas, 30×48 (91·5×122).
Purchased from the artist through the Whitechapel Art Gallery (Grant-in-Aid) 1962.
Exh: Whitechapel Art Gallery, March–April 1962 (290), and Arts Council tour, May–September 1962 (43).
Of this painting the artist wrote that ‘it is a formalized abstracted landscape which only acquired its title shortly before it was finished. I think it is a successful painting of its kind and belongs with the series of similar pictures based on Greek landscape theme done about the same time’ (letter of 22 June 1962).
