T01707 Two Sketches of a Cornfield with Harvesters c.1829
Not inscribed.
Oil on board, 4½ x 6¿ (11.5 x 17.5).
Presented by Mrs M. Bernard 1973.
Coll: Bought by the donor’s husband from the grandson of the artist c. 1940–5.
The two horizontal sketches are placed one above the other without an intervening break.
This sketch and T01708 come from a group of about twenty-five sketches of similar size and technique, some of them dated 1829, in the possession of the artist’s grandson until 1940–45. Most of the sketches in the group have two to four ‘S’ lines pencilled on the back. Their significance, if any, is not clear.
Published in The Tate Gallery Report 1972–1974, London 1975.
