T01966 STUDY FOR ‘LOOPED NETWORK SUSPENDED IN PICTORIAL SPACE’ 1974
Not inscribed
Pen, pencil and watercolour on graph paper, 20 1/8×15 1/8 (52×38.3)
Purchased from the artist (Knapping Fund) 1975
The study was made in the spring of 1974, its chief purpose being to work out the proportions for the painting and to change the line thickness from earlier versions of this idea. The proportions are identical to those of T01965 (the study is plotted on a 48 square grid, 6 across 8 down), and the main variation is in the colours used. Where the artist subsequently used dark blue diagonal lines in the network they are grey in the study, and the bright blue steep central diagonals are dark blue in the study. The idea was to indicate greater depth in the study, and a more optical, surface juxtaposition of colours in the painting.
