On Thursday 6 August, the third UNIQLO Tate Lates Night In will celebrate and explore the work of Andy Warhol to coincide with the current exhibition of the artist’s work at Tate Modern, now extended until 15 November 2020. On what would have been Warhol’s 92nd birthday, Tate Modern’s popular monthly event will be brought to viewers at home, with two content streams to choose from including artist talks, workshops, music, film and spoken word.

Following the reopening of all Tate’s galleries this week, broadcaster Zezi Ifore will host the virtual event from Tate Modern. Streaming on Tate’s website from 19:00 – 20:30 BST, highlights will include an illustration workshop with Kazvare Made It, a discussion from Talk Art podcast hosts Russell Tovey and Robert Diament with artist Laurie Anderson, and a screening of Happy Birthday, Marsha! Both event streams will remain online until 13 August 2020. Downloadable content to make, do and digest will be available on the webpage, including an illustrated colour-in sheet from Kazvare and a Warhol inspired cocktail recipe from Tate Eats.

The artist talks, workshops and film stream will feature Russell Tovey and Robert Diament, hosts of the popular Talk Art podcast, speaking with pioneering avant-garde artist Laurie Anderson about her time spent with Warhol and why she thinks we are all currently living in ‘Andy’s world’. This will be followed by an illustration workshop from Illustrator Kazvare Made It, who has reimagined Warhol as the fictitious character Ade Warhol, who mirrors Warhol’s journey; both from working class immigrant families seeking to create art to reflect our time. Olivia Laing, author of The Lonely City, will join journalist, podcaster and DJ Kate Hutchinson to discuss Warhol’s complex relationship with loneliness, and poet and performer Kai-Isaiah Jamal will present an original spoken word observation of Warhol’s studio and a response to Warhol’s Ladies & Gentleman series currently on display in the exhibition. There will also be a digital display from Fashion and art curator Ryan Lanji and artist Vivek Vadoliya, revisiting Warhol’s Screen Tests and turning the lens on to the members of Hungama, East London’s Queer Bollywood Hip Hop Night. The evening will end with a screening of Happy Birthday, Marsha!, a film about the iconic transgender artist and activist, Marsha ‘Pay it No Mind’ Johnson, written and directed by Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel.

Over on the music stream, viewers can enjoy an exclusive set with Bone Soda programmed by NTS Radio, performing from Tate Modern’s newly reopened Tanks, accompanied by vibrant and eclectic visuals.

UNIQLO Tate Lates occur at Tate Modern on the last Friday of every month and have left their mark on London’s cultural scene by offering a free and accessible creative hub for people to come together, socialise and exchange ideas. Over the past three and a half years, these events have been dedicated to showcasing local emerging talent, alongside well-known DJs and world-famous artists. UNIQLO Tate Lates Night In is part of Tate’s commitment to continue to inspire and connect people across the world and to support and platform local emerging artists alongside collection artists during the Coronavirus pandemic.

ABOUT ANDY WARHOL AT TATE MODERN
A shy, gay man from a religious, migrant, low income household, Andy Warhol (1928–87) went on to forge his own distinct path and emerge as the epitome of the pop art movement. This major exhibition has been extended for two months following its reopening, offering visitors a rare personal insight into how Warhol and his work marked a period of cultural transformation.
