Tate Publishing has announced the forthcoming publication of Monet: Painting Time, a major new book offering a radical re-examination of Claude Monet’s relationship with time, light and the canvas. Written by leading art historians, this beautifully illustrated volume coincides with Tate Modern’s first-ever exhibition focusing exclusively on Claude Monet (25 February – 27 June 2027) and expands on the show’s themes by examining Monet’s profound and evolving relationship with time. Based mainly in France, Monet lived through an epoch that witnessed the rapid rise of railways, industrialisation, the modern city and the widespread adoption of standardised timekeeping. Co-edited by Juliet Bingham, Curator of International Art at Tate Modern, Monet: Painting Time presents a revolutionary look at the world’s most celebrated impressionist, drawing on new research to consider how Monet responded to the seismic social changes of his era.
The volume positions Monet as a pioneer in making time a central subject of his art, exploring how his celebrated series including the Rouen Cathedrals, Poplars and Water Lilies, were deliberate attempts to capture the invisible mechanisms of the passage of time. Through meticulous analysis of his brushwork and correspondence, the authors reveal how Monet made the passage of time visible on the canvas, challenging the rapidly industrialising world around him.

Both the book and the exhibition illuminate Monet’s enduring connection with nature. By treating nature as a subject in perpetual movement, he spent a lifetime capturing its shifts across passing hours, seasons and years, culminating at Giverny and the creation of his celebrated Water Lilies cycle.
