This research project aims to deepen knowledge of contemporary socially engaged art (SEA) practices that are place based, human centred and generative, specifically in the context of museums and galleries. Aligning with the launch of the new Palais de Danse in St Ives, a distinct offer with a unique relationship to its locale, the research will investigate SEA practices situated in a range of settings to locate regional and national experiences within a global practice context. It seeks to expand the language of ownership associated with creative collaborative practices that involve artists, communities and organisations.

About Morgan Tipping

Morgan Tipping is a socially engaged artist with 20 years’ experience of practice-based research by collaborating with people caught between social, economic and political constraints to explore the complexities of living together. Foregrounding relational processes, her practice hinges around co-creating inclusive, experimental spaces that explore social relationships and challenge power imbalances. The resultant works encompass interactive and participatory art, video installation, film, immersive sound and audio, moving sculptures, publications and exhibitions. Career highlights to date include screening 'A Hopeful Sun' (director) about Kurdish poet İlhan Çomak internationally (prompting İlhan’s release after 37 years in prison), Co-creating The Factory art school with 250 neuro and mobility diverse people at The Workhouse (National Trust Creative Fellow), Exploring working class identity through car-meet culture (SET Gallery residency), Co creating women's centres and exhibitions with residents in refugee camps in Greece, undertaking a residency inside a care home (Cubitt Gallery, London), Transforming Atelje Clobb into an arts centre (Slovenia). Morgan is Associate Lecturer on the UWE MA Fine Art program, holds a Fine Art BA (Hons) from Central Saint Martins, PGDip in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy from Tavistock & Portman Trust and was a scholarship awardee from Institute of Education (PGCE in Art and Design).
