Tate Papers no.38: Voice/s in the Museum Summer 2026

This issue of Tate Papers explores how interpretation can address the complex expectations placed on museums in an age of heightened political focus. It emerges from a research project funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art, led by Tate in partnership with five museums from across the United States.

Inclusive Practice in the Art Museum: Writing for Audiences and Artists brought together museum professionals and academics to consider the challenges of producing culturally inclusive exhibition narratives in an age of identity politics.

The contributions this issue show interpretation in practice, sharing methods and case studies for writing inclusive cultural narratives. Alongside traditional research articles, the issue includes an audio essay as well as a guide for writing inclusive text in cultural institutions, which can be downloaded, printed and shared.
