William Hogarth, The Strode Family c.1738. Tate.

1730

See British artworks from 1730–1765, including paintings by Hogarth

During this period, artists who were born in Britain became successful for the first time. Artists such as William Hogarth were popular around the world. Hogarth is viewed by many as the founder of a British tradition of painting.

The art works in this room were created at a time Britain started to become powerful throughout the world. The strength of the navy, and the beginnings of the industrial revolution, led to the establishment of Britain as a global empire. During the reign of George II, Britain fought wars with Spain and France. The country possessed colonies in North America, islands in the Caribbean and parts of India.
