We Are Invisible We Are Visible: A film by Justin Edgar

‘A Dadaist film for the digital age, which will eviscerate the interventions and reassemble them in random order’ Justin Edgar

This new film, screened in Gallery 9, showcases footage from the thirty-one artist interventions which took place simultaneously on 2 July 2022 as part of We Are Invisible We Are Visible (WAIWAV): which marked the 102nd anniversary of the 1st International Dada Exhibition. Thirty-one d/Deaf, Disabled and Neurodivergent artists staged interventions at thirty museums and galleries across the UK. Dada was an art movement formed in response to the horror and recklessness of the First World War. WAIWAV, the Ampersand Award winning project by DASH, channels the defiant and absurdist spirit of the Dada movement, purposefully provoking visitors to reflect on the societal barriers that continue to restrict and exclude disabled people today.

Edgar is a filmmaker, visual artist and co-founder of 104, a production company who specialise in disability, film and visual art.

This film launches at Late at Tate on Friday 23 September, with a special talk by Mike Layward, Artistic Director of DASH (1999–2022) in Conversation with filmmaker Justin Edgar. Together they will share insights into the WAIWAV project and the making of this film.

BSL interpretation, hearing support and large print available.
