4 Different Ways Art Depicts Being A Dad

Discover artworks dad is sure to love

A dad can be many things: a teacher, a carer, a cat dad or simply there when we need him – and often all at the same time. Here we spotlight four artworks that celebrate all the great things that make dads who they are.

My Parents (1977) by David Hockney

David Hockney lovingly brings the personalities of his parents, Kenneth and Laura to life on this vibrant canvas. Kenneth, known for fidgeting (especially during sittings), is shown reading, paying no attention to being observed.

Laura stares directly at the viewer – perhaps a nod to her more self-assured character. He captures his dad and mum as they are, present and supportive – they posed for hours for the portrait.

Is your dad your best friend? The mirrored body language, heads close together, a protective arm affectionately bringing them closer together – Rene Matić leaves the viewer in no doubt of their bond.

This energetic photograph has a candid quality and captures a natural, fun moment of love between child and father.

Melanie and Me Swimming (1978–9) by Michael Andrews

Sometimes, we need our dad to help us dive in. British painter Michael Andrews created this work based on a photo of him swimming with six-year-old Melanie on a summer holiday.

Andrews is seen here, careful and patient, guiding his daughter to stay afloat. His vivid painting doesn’t just capture a precious memory; Andrews intended it as a metaphor for his daughter. She’s growing up, rising with him, perhaps ready to find her own way a little more (even with dad keeping a watchful eye).

Roger & Steve, London (1984, printed 2018) by Sunil Gupta

In this photo, Roger and Steve pose with their cat front and centre.

The direct eye contact of all three is a powerful and intimate image. Undoubtedly flexing their Cat Dad credentials, their feline family member perches curiously, seemingly both at ease in front of the camera, and on the knee of their fellow sitter.
