German artist Anselm Kiefer is renowned for challenging notions of identity, history and memory. His work includes large monumental paintings, sculptures and installations.
In this special talk coinciding with The EY Exhibition: Van Gogh and Britain, Anselm will share how the influential Dutch artist continues to inspire him today.
Following Anselm’s presentation, there will be a Q&A chaired by curator and writer Kathleen Soriano.
This talk will also include an introduction by exhibition curator Carol Jacobi.
Biographies
Anselm Kiefer
Anselm Kiefer’s prolific output has resulted in a body of work comprised of painting, installation, printmaking and photography. He uses symbolic, primal materials such as lead, clay and ash. One of the most important European artists of his generation, he examines historical themes and the legacy of recent European events, drawing on literature, politics, religion and philosophy.
Kiefer was born in Donaueschingen, Germany in 1945 and has lived and worked in France since 1993. He has exhibited widely, including solo shows at The Metropolitan Museum, New York (1998); the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2006); Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark (2010); Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2011), the Royal Academy of Arts, London (2014) and the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris (2015). In 2007 Kiefer became the first artist to be commissioned to install a permanent work at the Louvre, Paris since Georges Braque some 50 years earlier. In 2009 he created an opera, Am Anfang, to mark the 20th anniversary of the Opéra National de Paris.
Kathleen Soriano
Kathleen Soriano is an independent curator, art historian and broadcaster, currently Chair of the Liverpool Biennial. With over 30 years experience in the art world she has been responsible for contemporary and historical exhibitions, collections and public programmes at the National Portrait Gallery, London and the Royal Academy of Arts, where she was Artistic Director (2009–14), as well as at Compton Verney Art Gallery, where she was previously Director. She has lectured and written extensively in her field and her book Madam and Eve on women artists, was published in April 2018. Her broadcast activities include the five series of Portrait and Landscape Artist of the Year for SkyArts.
