For this special event Kehinde Andrews will be in conversation with renowned writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch to discuss the long and complex history of Black radical politics. This conversation frames the publication of Kehinde’s new book Back to Black: Re-telling Black Radicalism for the 21st Century, which draws on the past contributions of figures such as Marcus Garvey, Angela Davis and the Black Panthers. The book considers how the black radical tradition has been misrepresented and obscured over time: willfully distorted by those seeking to suppress it.
Afua and Kehinde will explore the true roots of this tradition, and join the dots to today’s struggles by showing what a renewed politics of black radicalism might look like in the 21st century.

Biographies
Afua Hirsch
Afua Hirsch is a writer, journalist and broadcaster. She is a columnist for The Guardian Newspaper, and a presenter on current affairs debate shows The Pledge on Sky News and Talk on CNN. Afua previously held the position of Social Affairs and Education Editor at Sky News, and West Africa Correspondent for the Guardian. She practises late as a human rights barrister and has worked in development across West Africa.
The daughter of a father with Jewish German heritage and a Ghanaian mother, she has long explored issues of identity, race and belonging, and her bestselling book on this subject Brit(ish) was published by Jonathan Cape in February 2018. Brit(ish) is the winner of the Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Prize.
Kehinde Andrews
Author and educator Kehinde Andrews is one of the leading Black political voices in Britain. He is associate professor in sociology at Birmingham City University, a regular writer of opinion pieces for the Guardian, Independent and Ebony magazine, and editor of the series Blackness in Britain. He was part of the team that launched the first Black Studies degree in Europe, is Co-chair of the Black Studies Association and of the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity. He regularly appears on television and radio.
