Oh Mia Word! Garden Storytelling Time

23 June 2018 at 15.00–18.00
Mia Violet

Mia Violet

Librarian Mia Violet and her not-so bookish guests invite you to share stories in the garden

14.00 – 14.30

Sarah Savage: Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl?

Tiny loves costumes! Tiny likes to dress up as an animal, or a doctor, or a butterfly. Tiny also prefers not to tell other children whether they are a boy or a girl. Tiny's friends don't mind, but when Tiny starts a new school their new friends can't help asking one question: "Tiny, are you a boy or are you a girl?"

Sarah Savage is a trans activist and co-author of Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl? aimed at readers 5 years and above. She is a co-founder and trustee of Trans Pride Brighton, now in its sixth year.

14.30 – 15.00

Alex Bertie: Trans Mission: My Quest to a Beard

Alex Bertie is a 22-year-old transgender YouTuber from rural Dorset. He’s been uploading videos on sexuality and gender identity weekly since he was 14, and has over 310,000 subscribers on YouTube and 87.6K followers on Instagram. His work has been picked up by organisations such as Childline and Stonewall, and recognised by The One Show, BBC Radio 1, and the Independent.

Alex Bertie will read from Trans Mission: My quest to a beard, his ground-breaking, first-hand account of his life, struggles and victories as a young transgender man.

15.00 – 15.30

Amy Lamé: From Prejudice to Pride: A History of the LGBTQ+ Movement

Amy Lamé is a writer, broadcaster, activist, performer and Night Czar of London. Amy co-founded RVT Future, a voluntary LGBTQ+ community group campaigning to preserve the iconic Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Amy is the 2014 recipient of the Free Derry Pink Wall Award for her work for LGBTQ+ civil rights. She is a familiar presence on TV, in print and on radio. She is a presenter on BBC Radio 6 Music and previously worked on BBC 2's Gaytime TV. Originally from New Jersey, she has been a proud Londoner for over two decades. Former Mayor of Camden, she currently serves as the Mayor of London's first Night Czar, overseeing the city's thriving night time economy and culture.

Amy will be reading from her new book that’s perfect for readers aged 11 and upwards From Prejudice to Pride: A history of the LGBTQ+ Movement.

16.30 – 17.00

Mia Violet: Yes, You Are Trans Enough: My Transition from Self-Loathing to Self-Love

Mia Violet is the author of Yes, You Are Trans Enough: My Transition from Self-Loathing to Self-Love. A bisexual, trans woman, Mia uses her sense of humour and passion for helping others to write about queer issues, self-love, and positive thinking. She also draws deeply from her own experiences of going from a miserable grump to an excitable ball of glitter.

This event includes book signings.
