Story Space Read Aloud: Dean Atta

3 February 2024 at 14.00–15.30
The book cover of Confetti by Dean Atta

Join a storytelling session and go on a colour walk of the galleries!

Meet artist, poet and author Dean Atta to celebrate the publication of his joyful new children’s picture book illustrated by Alea Marley, Confetti on the occasion of LGBT+ History Month.

Join an interactive reading of Atta’s story about a young girl who discovers pink confetti under her sofa and ends up seeing confetti everywhere in her world. Stay for creative activities linked to the story.

Like the main character of the story, we invite you to seek out colour in the galleries by going on a colour walk. What celebrations do you notice along the way in artwork?

Dean Atta is an award-winning Black British author and poet of Greek Cypriot and Jamaican heritage whose works have received praise from Bernardine Evaristo and Malorie Blackman. His novel in verse, The Black Flamingo, about a teen finding his voice through poetry and performance, won the Stonewall Book Award and was shortlisted for numerous further prestigious awards including the Carnegie Medal Prize. His poetry collection, There is (still) love here, explores acceptance, joy and the power of unapologetically being yourself and fully embracing who you are. Dean was born and raised in London, where he still lives.
