This talk explores the idea of the Pre-Raphaelites as a pioneering avant-garde group, whose disrespectful, anti-establishment campaign brought new life to British art. Under discussion will be the Pre-Raphaelites' interest in the new technology of photography, their engagement with radical politics and their project of seeing the world afresh.

Tim Barringer is Paul Mellon Professor of the History of Art at Yale University and co-curator of Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde. His work has focused on British art, American art and art of the British empire since 1750. His books include Men at Work: Art and Labour in Victorian Britain, Reading the Pre-Raphaelites (new edition 2012) and Before and After Modernism (2010). He was co-curator of American Sublime, Art and Emancipation in Jamaica, and Art and Music in Britain, and curator of Opulence and Anxiety.
