To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, Tate Liverpool mounts this impressive display of sculpture and drawings by the distinguished British artist and architect of memorials, Michael Sandle.

Featuring three of Sandle's finest sculptures, the centrepiece of the display is the work Twentieth Century War Memorial. Originally conceived as a response to America's involvement in the Vietnam War, it features a rotting Mickey Mouse figure in charge of a gleaming machine gun.

Also included is a model for Sandle's Malta Siege Bell Memorial, commissioned to celebrate the lives of soldiers and civilians who died defending Malta during the Second world War. The model and accompanying drawings are loaned from the artist's own collection.

The Drummer is the third major sculpture in the display. a monstrous robotised figure with a mask-like head, it towers over the viewer as a frightening image of military power.
