Art 360: After Dark

12 April 2019 at 20.30–midnight
Art 360

Join us as we open the entire gallery space after dark for a one-off immersive art and sound experience

On this evening musical artists and state of the art audio and visual technology will enhance the way visitors view the Op Art in Focus exhibition and permanent collections, by stimulating the senses and curating an immersive journey through the gallery.

Upon entry guests will receive a set of headphones, with three channels to choose from, which correspond to the guest DJ acts – Breakwave, local Wirral band Annexe the Moon, DJ and visual artist Nanna Koekoek and award-winning composer/sound designer Phil Channell. Each act will perform live throughout the night, and with specialist 3D microphones, can be heard through the headsets with an extra overlay of electronic sounds, further enhancing their sound.

Enjoy a delicious street food offer within the café space, and drinks until late.

Programme

Annexe the Moon - Foyer

Local, Wirral band Annexe the Moon will be playing their melodic Psych-Pop, overlaid with orchestral sounds in the foyer area, live and through headphones using a specialist 3D microphone. Raised and reared on the sunny northern shorelines of the Wirral Peninsula, ‘Annexe The Moon’ have been creating and baking their particular brand of melodic Psych-Pop since early 2016. Their debut single, 'Ever Meaning Less' troubled national daytime radio airplay via The Radcliffe and Maconie Show on Radio 6 Music.

Nanna KoeKoek and Phil Channell – 4th floor dock side gallery

Nanna Koekoek is a Dutch American illustrator, DJ and visual artist. After moving to the UK, she became fascinated by Britain’s fondness for a carpet and how it helps to create a homely feel and dampens the acoustics of crowded spaces. Inspired by the design of public carpets, Nanna has created 360 visuals that will be projected throughout the 4th floor dock side gallery. This will be accompanied by a soundscape created specially by Phil Channell to augment Nanna’s visuals, which are rooted in op art geometry, and enrich the entire experience. It will transport visitors using ambient noises from pubs in London. Instagram: @cuckoojar

Phil Channell

Phil Channell is an award winning and critically acclaimed composer and sound designer. With over 25 years of experience in producing electronic music and sound engineering Phil uses his classically trained skills to combine the organic with the electronic producing other worldly soundscapes that immerse the listener. In 2015 Phil transformed the Royal Albert Hall in London into an underwater extravaganza with an immersive soundscape that accompanied the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Jarvis Cocker for a Wireless Nights special, Underwater at the Proms. In 2018 he was especially commissioned by the BBC to compose a soundscape for the true crime series 'Death in Ice Valley’.

Breakwave – 4th floor dock side gallery

The official launch party for the Meine Nacht record label will take place on 4th floor dock side gallery with a live set from Breakwave accompanied by local artist Daniel Ruane, they will perform together using both musical hardware and software. The final act of the night (22.00-23.00) is a much anticipated DJ set from Breakwave; Founder and Director of the ‘Best of British’ nominated party Meine Nacht and resident DJ on NTS Radio. Performances will include 360-degree projections curated by Thomas Murray and Breakwave, for the dancefloor, silent disco and contemplation space.
