Debate: The Unstoppable Life of Artworks

Every dance, score and text has the potential to be reinvented, reinterpreted and adapted in the future.  Likewise visual art has a future life through the memory of the public.  Are masterpieces such as Swan Lake, The Iliad, or Matisse’s The Snail classics?  How can they be preserved without losing impact and relevance?

Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of English National Ballet, joins Francesco Manacorda, Artistic Director Tate Liverpool and Gemma Bodinetz, Artistic Director of Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse in a discussion chaired by Professor Nigel Weatherill, Vice Chancellor Liverpool John Moores University.  The debate in the setting of the newly opened Tate Collection Matisse display will examine the tension between preserving classics and reinventing them for a new audience.
