Join us for an afternoon of workshops, discussions and live performances where we consider what has had the most enduring impact on music and culture – Grime or Punk?
This event is a part of ON RECORD Festival; a celebration Black music in Liverpool and an exploration of the role it has played in the city and its communities over the past 70 years. The festival brings together original performances, collaborations, talks and specially commissioned content.
If you’re interested in music subcultures, you may enjoy our current special exhibition, Lucy McKenzie. The artist explores many themes in her work including international sport, the representation of women, gender politics and music subcultures.
Programme
12.00–16.00 Art
Liverpool based artist and illustrator Sumuyya Khader will provide an artistic response to the work of Lucy McKenzie. Local photographer Anthony Wilde will curate a collection of portraits that reflect Liverpool’s Grime sub-culture.

12.00–14.00 Workshop
- Designer, artist and LJMU BA Fashion Programme Leader, Andrew Ibi and Cathy Reilly, LJMU Fashion Support Officer will lead a workshop creating modern-day outfits that mix Grime and Punk fashion.
15.00–16.00 Panel Discussion
- Hear how Grime developed into the biggest music and culture movement since Punk as panellists discuss which genre has had the bigger influence. Participants will include journalist Laura 'Hyperfrank' Brosnan; artists Manga Saint Hilare, Koj, DJ G33 and will be hosted by artist and cultural leader Saskilla.
17.00–18.00 Live Performances
- Panellists Manga Saint Hilare and Koj are joined by Dapz on the Map and P3Lz for live performances in the gallery.

Laura 'Hyperfrank' Brosnan
Laura ‘Hyperfrank’ Brosnan is an Executive editor of TRENCH Magazine and a Columnist at Complex UK.
Koj
Koj is a Liverpool native, creating new waves in scouse rap. With their debut single Blue Notes featuring across BBC Radio 1 Xtra and Capital Xtra; Koj is paving the way for a new sound born in the North West.
G33
G33 aka Gaia Ahuja is a London-born, Liverpool-based DJ. G33 brings together sounds of UK Garage, Grime, Afrobeats and Dancehall. Mixing for DJ MAG, BBC Radio 1Xtra, Rinse FM and more, Gaia is also a member of Girl’s Don’t Sync DJ collective.
Manga Saint Hilare
The long-standing grime heavy hitter is known amongst his peers as one of the best and most consistent lyricists in the scene. Nominated for Best Grime Act 2020 by the prestigious MOBO awards, Manga's lyrics carry a powerful message.
Saskilla
Hassan Matthews aka Saskilla was born in Leeds but grew up and honed his musical skills in South East London. His lyrical content focused on the intersection of poetry, street life and sociological analysis. Once part of Grime collective Roll Deep; Saskilla has gone on to form other groups, perform as a solo artist as well as move into presenting and acting.
Dapz on the Map
Birmingham-born, multi-talented artist, Dapz OTM is now an integral part of the next generation of Grime MCs/Singers. His songs touch personal and political issues and he often talks of the struggle he’s faced as an aspiring artist attempting to balance being both a father and a musician. With a steady rise up the ranks in the UK Urban music scene, Dapz OTM has been playlisted on BBC Radio 1Xtra, and Rinse FM.
P3Lz
P3Lz is a rapper from L8, Liverpool. Although having been on the scene for a short period of time, she has become a prevalent name.
