The celebrated German artist takes over the Tanks

The third annual BMW Tate Live Exhibition is dedicated to artist Anne Imhof.

Sex is both an exhibition by day and a series of five live works staged at night. By using this singular word title Imhof follows her previous works Angst 2016 and Faust 2017: words that evoke universal themes with wide associations for viewers.

Imhof constructs atmospheric environments inhabited by groups of collaborators. For ten days and five nights, they will take over the Tanks with performances that combine music, painting and choreographed gestures.

During the day, you’ll be able to explore Imhof’s installation of paintings, sculptures and architectural interventions for free. Then in the ticketed evening events, the spaces will come alive with music, lights and live performances.

The evening performances contain strobe lighting and explicit content and may not be suitable for children or visitors at risk of photosensitive epilepsy.

Imhof (b.1978) lives and works in Frankfurt and Berlin. She represented Germany at the 2017 Venice Biennale where she was awarded a Golden Lion for her work Faust. This is her first exhibition in a UK museum.

Sex is the first of three chapters in a project commissioned by Tate Modern, London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli-Turin.
