Over four weekly sessions, participants will build their own backstrap loom to create a unique artwork. Drawing inspiration from Anni Albers, participants will discover about the artist’s life and work, and experiment with different techniques and materials. This includes plastic, pipe cleaners and other found objects.
This course is led by artist Anke Sievers and requires no prior knowledge. Materials to be provided however participants are welcome to bring additional items.
Course outline
Week One: Introduction
How can textiles create a form of expression and play? Using Anni Albers’ practice as a starting point, we’ll explore some key concepts, influences and styles and start on our own pieces.
Week Two: Technique
Hand versus loom weaving? What is the difference? We’ll look at basic techniques, including warp-faced versus weft-faced weaving, and other approaches.
Week Three: Material and form
Using organic and synthetic matter, we’ll work with different materials to play with texture and form.
Week Four: Influence
With a final visit to the exhibition, we’ll finish our weaves, discuss our own influences and artworks.
Biography
Born in Weener, Germany, Anke Sievers is a contemporary artist whose practice includes textiles, printmaking and drawing. She has exhibited internationally and recently completed a residency at Stiwdio Maelor in North Wales.
