London-based artist Mark Leckey presents a new chanted sound piece that addresses the pasts that haunt us all. Building on his recent work Exorcise the Bridge, the work reverberates through the museum in reference to The Fugs ‘Exorcising the Evil Spirits of the Pentagon’. In October 1967 the New York-based band marched on Washington in an attempt to levitate the Pentagon off its foundations chanting ‘Out Demon’s Out!’
Leckey's work follows performances by the Chilean-American artist Sylvia Palacios Whitman who creates fantastical live images that exaggerate the everyday through their simple actions and deadpan humour. She studied painting and sculpture at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago before moving to New York in 1960. From 1970 to 1973 she danced with Trisha Brown and The Trisha Brown Dance Company. Between 1974 and 1984 she staged her own performances in downtown Manhattan, and in museum spaces, including the Whitney Museum and Guggenheim Museum in New York and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
In a programme of performance titled Around the Edge, eight key works from this experimental period are presented at Tate Modern: Human Paper Coil; Cup and Tail; Cat’s Cradle; Mummies; Negatives; Cloud; Green Hands, and Elephant Trunk.
On display throughout Ten Days Six Nights is Joan Jonas’s Reanimation 2010/12/13 a mesmerizing installation scored by Jason Moran presented in the East Tank. On view in the Transformer galleries are three important early works by Jonas: Cones/May Windows (After Mirage) 1976/2011; Stage Sets 1977, and the video Wind 1968. The Tanks foyer hosts a new commission by Jumana Emil Abboud that draws on Palestinian folklore and fairy tales.
