Boetti travelled to Afghanistan between 1971 and 1979. He opened the ‘One Hotel’ in Kabul and worked with craftspeople making embroideries and rugs. After the Soviet invasion, he began to work with Afghan refugees in Peshawar. Many of the Persian texts in his embroideries address the circumstances of exile. This panel discusses questions such as: Why did Boetti spend so much time in Kabul? How was the production of his work organised? What was the place of the One Hotel in his practice? What is significant about the Persian texts in his embroideries? How involved was he with the politics of Afghanistan after 1979? Speakers include Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Adam Curtis, Pip Rau and Mario Garcia Torres.
