Join artist Tom Lovelace to explore how photography has responded to paintings, sculpture, performance and words. Photography has crossed paths with other artistic genres since its invention. Through experimentation, play and dialogue, you will examine the material practice and interpretive approaches to photography and explore these exciting points of medium convergence.
Each session will include a visit to Tate’s collection displays followed by a practical session of making.

Programme
Week 1: Introduction
A welcome evening including an opening talk, introducing key course themes and artworks, and a walk through selected Tate Modern displays.
Week 2: Photography and Painting
The compelling and sometimes contentious relationship between these two mediums has been constant since the inception of photography. This session includes a study of artists including Helena Almeida, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol and Walead Beshty, and will be followed by a practical experimentation activity with painting, mark making and photographs.
Week 3: Photography and Sculpture
Photography has played a key role in shaping encounters with and interpretations of sculpture. Some contemporary photographers also create objects, sets and sculpture to use as subjects for their work. This session will include a focus on artists including Rachel Whiteread, Marwan Rechmaoui, Ana Lupas and Sarah Sze. Discussions will be followed by a practical session, exploring sculpture through photography.
Week 4: Photography and Performance
Photography has been an important tool for documenting performance, actions and interventions. This session will include a look back at Tate Modern’s survey exhibition, Performing for the Camera (2016) and will followed by a workshop exploring movement, collaboration and photography. This session will also feature contributions from artist Alexandra Davenport.
Week 5: Photography and Words
This final session will experiment and play with the convergence of photography, writing and words. The photobook and the role of text will be discussed, followed by a visit to ARTIST ROOMS: Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, and Feminism and Media collection displays.
Biography
Tom Lovelace
Tom Lovelace is an artist based in London. Working at the intersection of photography, sculpture and performance, Lovelace explores the semantics of the everyday, revealing and reimagining materials, processes and histories. International residencies include Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK (2017), Lendi Projects, Switzerland (2015), European Capital of Culture, Aarhus, Denmark (2013) and the Anna Mahler International Foundation, Italy (2012). Lovelace studied Photography at the Arts University Bournemouth, receiving First Class Honours before studying Art History at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He is a Visiting Tutor at the Royal College of Art, London and a Lecturer in Photography at the Arts University, Bournemouth.
