Begin Again: Sonic Activation

Join us for a sonic activation in response to Begin Again

For Tate Modern’s 25th birthday weekender, join us for a sonic activation in response to Abbas Zahedi’s commission Begin Again which explores ecological grief and connectivity.

The installation includes instruments and playback devices which have been plugged into Tate Modern’s utility pipes and deeper architecture. The sound composition shifts between moments of harmony and disintegration. Each sonic collapse prompts the piece to rebuild, emphasising the power of renewal and beginning again.

Musicians Saul Eisenberg, Dave Meckin and Vanessa Bedoret will each present a sonic activation in response to the commission.

16:15-17:00 – Vanessa Bedoret

The Begin Again commission creates a space for collective listening where participants can reflect on how to protect and restore ecological connectivity. On the first Saturday of each month Abbas Zahedi hosts a support group for the collective processing of ecological grief. In collaboration with thinkers, artists and musicians, participants are invited to consider ‘How can we make sense of a world increasingly shaped by loss and disconnection?’. Find out more about the monthly support groups here.

Abbas Zahedi (b. 1984, London, UK) is an artist with a background in medicine from University College London and an MA in Contemporary Photography and Philosophy from Central Saint Martins. His practice engages with systems of care, thresholds of experience, and the creation of communal spaces for dialogue. Zahedi’s work often weaves together personal narratives and broader collective concerns, using sound and materiality as conduits for reflection and connection. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Stanley Picker Fellowship (2024); Artangel: Making Time (2023); Frieze Artist Award (2022); Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award (2021); Serpentine Galleries’ Support Structures for Support Structures (2021); Artangel: Thinking Time (2020); Jerwood Arts Bursary (2019); Aziz Foundation Scholarship (2018); and the Khadijah Saye Memorial Scholarship (2017). Zahedi is an Associate Lecturer at the Royal College of Art, London, and has taught at universities across the UK and internationally.

Vanessa Bedoret is a London-based French violinist, vocalist and composer. She integrates her classical background to experimental production, as a means to shape intimate and cinematic compositions. On 8th March 2024, she released her debut album 'Eyes' with the label Scenic Route. In 2023 and 2024, she accompanied Astrid Sonne for her new album Great Doubt’s tour, as a string trio with Astrid and cellist Emma Barnaby. For her solo performances, she performed at venues such as Cafe Oto and the ICA in London, and shared stages with Lorenzo Senni, Nourished by Time, Chanel Beads, Mun Sing, Alex Zhang Hungtai, Mark William Lewis, Voice Actor, Helen Island, Flora Yin Wong, Ekaterina Bazhenova-Yamasaki, John T. Gast and Nexcyia to name a few.

Dave Meckin is a sound designer/artist and researcher with a PhD in Media and Arts Technology from Queen Mary University of London. Dave has worked with a number of studios and artists such as pioneering arts collective United Visual Artists (UVA) led by Matthew Clark, Oliver Beer and Jiayu Liu. His collaborative practice focuses on designing generative and responsive soundscapes for large scale installations in galleries and festivals across the world, with recent projects shown at 180 Studios in London, Taikang Art Museum in Beijing and Kunsthalle Praha in Prague. Dave’s research is focused on design methods for creating novel instruments for sonic expression with and for disabled musicians and regularly works with the charity Drake Music, a national organisation specialising in music, disability and technology. He is a Tutor on the Information Experience Design MA programme at the Royal College of Art.
