BMW Tate Live Exhibition A Happy Ending III: Tate Tales

Explore artist Jumana Emil Abboud's new commission drawing on Palestinian folklore and fairy tales

Jumana Emil Abboud has created A Happy Ending III: Tate Tales 2018, a new multi-layered installation that occupies the Tanks foyer for the duration of the Live Exhibition. Each day, the installation hosts storytellers whose tales weave together past and present, historical traditions and contemporary concerns. The work is the latest instalment of an ongoing project in which Abboud has collected and reinterpreted Palestinian folk-tales. She explores themes of memory, loss, and resilience through our relationship to landscape. Together with her collaborator Issa Freij, Abboud travelled to film the sites of stories, so-called 'haunted sites'. These are often places that have a deep connection with water sources believed to have restorative powers.

Videos shot in the locations visited by Abboud and Freij form the backdrop to a series of daily performances which reimagine the stories attached to these specific places. Visitors are invited to hear Abboud and a cast of local storytellers tell stories inspired by the original tales. It has been said of her work that it seeks 'to reflect a Palestinian cultural landscape in which the struggle for continuity in the wider political context requires a constant process of metamorphosis and ingenuity'.
