Yvonne Rainer (born 1934) is a choreographer, dancer, writer and filmmaker based in New York, USA. She played a key role in revolutionising dance in the 60s and early 70s, inspiring many generations of contemporary performers. Rainer will be in conversation with Catherine Wood, Interim Director, Tate Modern, and author of the book Yvonne Rainer: The Mind Is A Muscle (2007), and Dr Martin Hargreaves, dramaturg, writer and performer, and leader of the Rose Choreographic School.
Please note that Yvonne Rainer will not be in-person at Tate Modern, she will be joining the conversation remotely.
Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Rainer’s groundbreaking work Trio A, dancers perform the piece continuously in a staging devised for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 July 2026. These performances will be free and open to all.
Trio A is co-staged by Martin Hargreaves, Head of Rose Choreographic School, Sara Wookey and Tate, transmitted by Sara Wookey, curated by Rosalie Doubal, Senior Curator, International Art (Performance & Participation) and Jess Baxter, Assistant Curator, International Art, and produced by Demelza Watts, Producer of Performance and Public Practice.
Trio A is supported by Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels. With additional support from The Performance Activation Fund. In collaboration with Sadler’s Wells for the supply of studio space and dramaturgy.
