Using the work of the surrealists in the collection as a starting point and drawing inspiration from prominent artists in the Tate Collection, learn the introductory key skills and techniques of ink drawing as well as gaining an insight into the world of Surrealism.
Over the course of the one-day workshop, you will build up the introductory skills and techniques needed to get you started making your own masterpieces.
The price of the workshop includes materials to take home with you, including a set of Ithell Colquhoun Inks Set, produced in collaboration with Tate.
This session is for people aged 16 and over.
Tour, 30 minutes: A tour of the display International Surrealism with a focus on line and colour in the works.
Part One, 30 minutes: In this part of the workshop, you will learn all about what exactly drawing inks are, how they differ from other materials and how you might use them. You will be following examples through hands-on exercises. You will also learn what paper to use and how you can use the paper as a tool.
Part two, 30 minutes: Line drawing with Inks and an introduction to nibs. Learning by example you will be shown how to use Nibs.
Part three, 30 minutes: You will learn key techniques such as hatching, cross hatching. You will explore each technique through a series of quick sketching exercises.
Tea Break, 15 minutes
Part four, 20 minutes: Using a range of tools including paintbrushes and found materials as well as different types of paper we will learn how to experiment with Inks, including an introduction to mixing, where we will learn the various different ways we can mix drawing inks to produce different colours and effects.
Final Piece, 25 mins: We will use all our new techniques and knowledge to make a surrealist inspired finished piece. Individual tips and any questions that you might have during the process will be answered.
All Tate Modern entrances are step-free. You can enter via the Turbine Hall and into the Natalie Bell Building on Holland Street, or into the Blavatnik Building on Sumner street.
There are lifts to every floor of the Blavatnik and Nathalie Bell buildings. Alternatively you can take the stairs.
- Fully accessible toilets are located on every floor on the concourses.
- A quiet room is available to use in the Natalie Bell Building on Level 4.
- Ear defenders can be borrowed from the Ticket desks.
