The Little Book of Answers

The category of citizenship is not fixed: it is a social construct that evolves in response to political and ideological shifts.

Artist Laura Malacart has compiled The Little Book of Answers using the answers to the UK citizenship test. The Book is a device to interrogate the UK naturalisation process while exploring the official narrative about what it means to be British.

The Book is the basis for a one day event that takes place in the Turbine Hall. For this event there is a choice of short activities to take part in and playfully experience how to perform the knowledge from the naturalisation test.

From midday, participate in a 15-minute movement-based workshop (kinetic memorisation) and a voice workshop (British pronunciation). Come to the open mic stage to freely perform the Answers from the Book. Listen to an immersive sound work made in collaboration with non-native English speakers.

Throughout the day you can also choose to take part in a survey and live feed to the project on #thelittlebookofanswers.

Laura Malacart’s practice focuses on language, voice and collaborative modes to interrogate socio-political categories that contribute to the production of identity.

This project is supported by English language students from United Migrant Workers Education Project (UMWEP) within Unite the union and is curated by Tate Community Programme.
