Move on and off set in two short films that circle around roles and romance

This programme brings together two films which capture the staging of literary works outside urban centres in France and Argentina. Storylines on and off set begin to parallel one another as protagonists move out of their roles as actors and directors.

Mati Diop’s Big in Vietnam observes the making of a French-Vietnamese film director’s cinematic adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos’s Les Liaisons dangereuses in the outskirts of Marseille. When the film’s lead actor goes missing in the woods, she too wanders off the set to explore the port city. There she befriends a Vietnamese man haunted by his past.

Matías Piñeiro’s Rosalinda captures a young cast’s production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It in a rural setting outside Buenos Aires. Intertwining their roles and their real lives, the film explores how cinema can expand and question the logic of theatre.
