The publication positions performance not as a genre of art separate from object-making, but as an attitude that has infiltrated the entire realm of contemporary art. Joining Catherine Wood for the discussion will be artist Anne Imhof and independent curator and lecturer Elvira Dyangani Ose chaired by art critic Isobel Harbison.
Biographies
Elvira Dyangani Ose
Dyangani Ose is Director of The Showroom, London and is Lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, and member of the Thought Council at the Fondazione Prada. She was part of the curatorial team of the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement 2016 in Geneva, Curator of the eighth edition of the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary art, (GIBCA 2015) and Curator International Art at Tate Modern (2011 – 2014). Dyangani Ose has contributed to art journals such as Nka and Atlántica and has served as guest editor of Caderno Sesc_Videobrasil 10.
Anne Imhof
Anne Imhof (b. 1978) graduated from Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main in 2012. Imhof was awarded the Preis der Nationalgalerie in 2015 and went on to produce the opera Angst, which was presented in three acts at Kunsthalle Basel, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, and the Biennale de Montréal in 2016. She was the German pavilion’s artist at the 57th International Art Exhibition—La Biennale di Venezia in 2017, where her exhibition and performance work Faustwas awarded the Golden Lion for best national participation. In the same year, she also received the 2017 Absolut Art Award.
Isobel Harbison
Dr Isobel Harbison is an art critic and Lecturer in Critical Studies in the Art Department, Goldsmiths. She regularly writes for a range of titles including Art Monthly, Frieze and Art Agenda. Her first book, Performing Image, traces the intersection of performance and moving image since the 1960s in order to historicise and contextualise the birth and growth of social media use, and subjectively felt instincts to perform images within and against new economies of attention. It will be published by the MIT Press in February 2019.
Catherine Wood
Catherine Wood, Senior Curator, International Art (Performance) at Tate Modern. Performances programmed at Tate include works by Mark Leckey, Joan Jonas, Guy de Cointet, Jiri Kovanda and Sturtevant amongst many others. A regular contributor to Afterall, Artforum, Mousse and Frieze magazines, she has also written numerous catalogue essays, as well as contributing to the book and symposium Choreographing Exhibitions by Mathieu Copeland (La Ferme du Buisson, Paris). She is on the board for the non-profit space Studio Voltaire in London and was on the juries for the Ernst Schering Foundation Art Award, the Pinchuk Prize and the Annual Film and Video Umbrella award in 2013.
