When we are little, we play instinctively to learn about our surroundings and our place in the world. Playfulness is associated with childhood. But artists need to play, with materials, with time and with failure. Why is play important for everyone? We believe play can be a radical, powerful force for good.
We have been working with students aged 5 to 18 across the London borough of Greenwich, exploring what play means to them and thinking hard about the role of playfulness in education. We've been working with the artist collective Leap Then Look who prioritise play in their practice. We are interested in the importance of play for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, particularly students on the autistic spectrum. What are the benefits of play?
