UNIQLO Tate Play Monster Chetwynd: Thunder, Crackle and Magic

19 July – 25 August

Courtesy of the artist

Thunder, Crackle and Magic is a theatrical installation where you can explore, perform and play

Artist Monster Chetwynd has created three fantastical sets in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. Each stage is a living spectacle of creatures, costumes and handcrafted props. Slip through the backstage shadows, act out scenes, and watch as the drama unfolds.

On the first stage, Dragon Island, play the role of a performer, musician, or mischief-maker, tasked with charming a dragon. Throw on costumes, animate puppets, and create movement and sound in Wild Animal Forest. Finally, face the forces of wind, fire and water in Tested by the Elements.

Chetwynd’s installation is inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s 1975 film, The Magic Flute. Bergman's film is an adaptation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 1791 opera of the same name. The story follows a group of characters as they overcome monsters, villains and other perils.

Both Bergman's film and Chetwynd's installation celebrate the magic of theatre. They highlight the role of stagecraft and our own imagination in creating this magic.

Chetwynd invites you to take the stage and let your imagination run wild.

All Tate Modern entrances are step-free. You can enter via the Turbine Hall and into the Natalie Bell Building on Holland Street, or into the Blavatnik Building on Sumner street.

There are lifts to every floor of the Blavatnik and Natalie Bell buildings. Alternatively you can take the stairs.

  • Fully accessible toilets are located on every floor on the concourses.
  • A quiet room is available to use in the Natalie Bell Building on Level 4.
  • Ear defenders can be borrowed from the Ticket desks.
