Shamiyaana: Food for Thought, Thought for Change is an art installation good enough to eat, and centred around the sharing of food. This summer, Rasheed Araeen and UNIQLO Tate Play invites you to enjoy and share delicious food, connection and conversation with those around you.
First opened in Athens in 2017, Shamiyaana revolves around Araeen’s desire that art be in our everyday lives; that simple activities like reading, playing, talking or eating are moments when we can be creative together. ‘I’m trying to take art back to its roots, and the roots of art lie in the creativity of the people. Even cooking is a creative act,’ Araeen explains.
Shamiyaana’s structure is based on a tent used in marriage ceremonies across India and West Asia, where guests are welcomed and served delicious platters of food. Vivid, brightly coloured symmetrical tents echo the playful structure of Zero to Infinity as part of UNIQLO Tate Play: Rasheed Araeen, Zero to Infinity. In both works, Araeen explores breaking ever-changing structures to create a sense of community and something new.
