Celebrate the festive season with a weekend of special activities at Tate St Ives

Winter Festival 2023 celebrates community, inspired by the themes of artistic solidarity and creating collectively from the exhibition The Casablanca Art School. Enjoy performances, talks, workshops and more.

This festival is for all ages, including creative activities for families and young people, with discounted entry of £1 at Tate St Ives.

Programme

Families: Resources available at the Families Welcome Desk

Time: Throughout the festival

Location: Heron Mall, Level 1

Head to the Families Welcome Desk to pick up our Sketchbook or Art Explorer cards and get creative. Or have fun exploring the galleries with our Explorer Backpacks and Tate Shapes activities.

Artists in Residence: Together for Change with Redruth Press

Time: Throughout the festival

Location: Foyle Studio, Level 3

Casablanca Art School tutor Mohammed Chabâa once said ‘the poster is a painting that is accessible to all’. Contribute to poster designs with festival artists in residence Redruth Press who use and share accessible and engaging print processes to generate striking posters that record, publicise, and provoke discussion. For the festival they invite everyone to come ‘together for change’ – what message do you want to share?

Music: Community Choirs

Time: Between 11.00–14.00 on Saturday and Sunday, and 15.30–16.00 on Saturday

Location: Gallery 8, Level 2

Discover local choirs singing at the heart of the festival in the beautiful, curved gallery facing Porthmeor Beach.

On Saturday:

11.00–11.30 Cornwall Music Service Trust’s Combined Primary Schools Choir

12.00–12.30 Cornwall Music Service Trust’s Youth Chamber Choir

13.00–13.45 Levow an Bys (Voices of the World)

13.15–14.00 St Ives Combined Chapels’ Cornish Carol Choir

Performance: Connecting Forms by Shallal and Matthew Thomason

Time: 14.30 on Saturday and Sunday

Location: Gallery 8, Level 2

Experience this new performance work by community dance collective Shallal, with composer Matthew Thomason, in partnership with Tate St Ives. This collaboration takes inspiration from Barbara Hepworth’s Single Form (1961-64), sited at the United Nations Plaza in New York. Connecting Forms embodies values of equity, collective unity and friendship whilst responding to human experiences of loss and legacy.

This will be BSL Interpreted on both days.

Workshop: Giant Jewellery

Time: 10.30–12.30 and 14.00–16.00

Location: Gallery 6, Level 3

Be inspired to make your own beautiful embossed giant jewellery using cardboard, string and foil. Create eye-catching shiny jewellery to wear as you explore the galleries. This activity is designed for families but open to all.

Talk: 10 Minute Talks

Time: Popping up throughout the festival

Location: Around the galleries, Level 3 (see in house for further details on the day)

Hear Tate staff share their personal responses to favourite artworks in the Tate Collection.

BSL Interpreted talks will take place at 14.00 and 15.30 each day.

Workshop: Slow Looking

Time: 16.00

Location: Gallery 6, Level 3

Be curious, take a longer look at artworks in The Casablanca Art School exhibition and participate in conversations that generate collective interpretations of them. These light-hearted sessions are inspired by Look Groups, small gatherings of people who get together regularly in their own communities, to talk about art, artists, and ideas.

This will be BSL Interpreted.

BSL interpretation available.

Hearing support and large print available.

Step-free access from front and rear entrances.

Two accessible parking spaces are available at the top rear entrance to Tate St Ives in the Barnoon Reserved car park, TR26 1JD. When looking at the sea, this carpark is to the right of the larger Barnoon Long Stay carpark. These parking spaces are first come first served, booking essential, at least 24 hours in advance.

Once you have parked, you will enter via the Staff Entrance across the level terrace, approximately 10 meters from the parking space. From here, staff will facilitate your access to the gallery but cannot accompany you in the lift to the gallery level.

Three wheelchairs are available to reserve for free. Bookings should be made at least 24 hours before visiting.

Assistance and support animals are welcome.

A fully accessible Changing Places toilet is located close to Gallery 1. It has a height-adjustable changing bench and hoist. There is another accessible toilet close to Gallery 6.

For booking any of the above that require advance booking or further enquiries, please call 01736 791177.
